Bringing my tomato plants home I was worried that it would not adapt will to the climate at home. I built a fenced off area for my mothers plants so I wasn't worried about animals such as my dogs or rats that could possibly damage or eat my tomatoes. I brought my plants home and the first thing I did was place the two pots in the fenced off area in my yard, and I was looking for a semi-shady area for my plants. I ended up placing it under a Ti leaf plant and it was the perfect place. Now I just keep checking it every time at home, as of now Im waiting for my plant to become to big and I will have to connect to a post.

Experiences of a locally sourced mealAlthough in the dorms I could not find a locally sourced meal, I did have one the weekend before at my house. This meal was sourced in my backyard and it has been in the works for awhile now. I planted my first banana tree stalk in my backyard last year and I finally got the fruits of my labor. It was very satisfying to know that what I put in could give something in return. At first I had little hope for the banana tree because the first few weeks it showed no real signs of growth and then the summer of 2018 hit and my banana tree exploded with no growth and flowers. The amount of bananas I had in my first harvest was amazing, It was a lot more then I could ever eat in a single sitting. I was able to eat about 10 to be satisfied and considered that to be the lunch of my day. This locally sourced meal was to be shared with not only my Ohana but my neighbors as well.
What are your takeaways from the learning trip? I learned a lot on the trip to Waimanalo at CTHAR Learning center, a place ran by University of Hawaii offering a place for native planting and organic farming. The farm is separated into many different sections and isn't focused on strictly one type of plant/crop. CTHAR had many types of Sugarcane, Kalo types, and many more fields filled with plants and crops. One of the most important things I learned is when the caretaker of CTHAR thought us about the use of organic soil. Organic soil is considered to be soil that has no chemicals or other added elements to alter the natural being of the plant, soil, or bugs. If farmers want to be organic but have trouble with insects, they arent doomed. There are organic sprays and other methods of removing insects that harm crops. |
